Surly Karate Monkey

October 22, 2008 – 10:07 am

I first started up InDemoVeritas, at the suggestion of my friend, Joost Bonsen, in his role as maximizer of progress.    A web-server through go-daddy   was ready to be better used, and here it is brought to you with wordpress.  Not too shabby.

One weekly bicycle rant, I thought, and I’ll have fifty articles in a year.  So let me begin.

This happened on Monday evening, October 20th, 02008.

The guy pounded past me on his racing bike, in front of the new HLS construction on Mass. Ave.  A red light behind me, red light soon to change in front.

“On your right.”

He blew by me and into the stopped traffic, sliding between cars and jersey barriers.  The light turned green and the van in front accelerated to the bicycle’s speed and turned right.  The guy, who seemed to be radiating impatient anger, was also in the van’s blind spot and was totally pwned by the van.   It forced him into a full right turn before he could let go of the van.

At my more leisurely clip, I got to watch the situation developing from afar, and happening from real close.  His ride?  Track bike, no lights, yellow reflective panel on a bag.  As the van started to move I thought “There’s a turn hazard.” and then I was watching the turn, watching the guy stay upright and un-smeared, thankfully, as the van moved without awareness through the bicycle’s path, and on.

The guy let go and the van drove off.  He turned in the mouth of Everett Street and back onto Mass. Ave. without a word.  Still obviously impatient, he seemed less angry.  I lost him at the next light, as I calmly proceeded and he pounded the road full out.

My ride?  Black Surly Karate Monkey built by Alex at Quad bikes in Cambridge, MA.
